Walking around College of the Sequoias, you’ll notice the different fashion choices every student has. Students walk into class two ways: dressed as if they’re going into a fashion shoot or as if they just got out of bed. Fashion at COS is so diverse that it brings students confidence and reflects who they are.
Fashion can bring students together as a form of expression that some students enjoy. It’s their favorite part of their day that they feel most confident in. Some students only have one class that day, and yet they come dressed up. It’s a motivation for some students to come to class to show their peers their own outfits or just simple self-motivation to get to class.
While many students enjoy waking up early to plan out their outfits, others enjoy comfort over style. They would rather wear pajamas, sweats, or casual clothing for those two-hour lectures. With schedules packed like a full calendar, students often push fashion to the back of their minds.
Walking around the quad, library, and student lounge area, it’s so easy for outfits to catch your eye. Some students wear athletic clothing, trendy streetwear, vintage pieces, or business casual outfits between classes. Students have different clothing preferences and should feel comfortable wearing what they like without worrying about others’ opinions. People have their own unique taste in fashion.
COS students like Danielle Andrade takes pride in her own fashion choices when going to class. Andrade described her style as “whimsical and playful,” explaining that her fashion is not tied to one specific style. “My style can be really diverse which makes dressing up enjoyable,” Andrade said. Andrade also explained that what she wears can affect how she feels during the day. “What I wear can affect my confidence and mood,” she said.
Having diverse fashion builds bonds through simple compliments or questions people might have, like “Where did you get your jeans from?” Compliments and questions about someone’s outfit can make someone’s day. Whether the outfit is casual clothing or if a student is dressed as a runway model, it brings them joy.
Another student, Jessica Chavez, has her own thoughts on the fashion culture at COS and what her experience is like. Chavez says that she “Believes that fashion helps students express themselves because it shows their personality with different accessories and colors. I have met some nice people by getting complimented both ways and usually find similar interests in styles.”
Fashion at COS continues to bring students together. It involves students becoming more outgoing with their peers. Whether through a simple compliment, a conversation about where someone bought their outfit, or sharing a confident personal style on campus, makes students feel comfortable. What students wear is more than just clothing.
