Writing this article is not easy because saying goodbye to someone so important never is. Our Editor-in-Chief, Clare Carlson, will be leaving this semester for new opportunities and a new school. Carlson has always pushed us to become better writers while making everyone feel welcome and heard. Whether she was helping edit stories or making us laugh during stressful moments, she always brought encouragement and positivity to the newsroom.
Like many people, Carlson’s career journey started when she was young. Her mother used to tell her she would make a “really good lawyer” because she was outspoken and opinionated. Even though she appreciated the idea, Carlson discovered journalism was the perfect mix of creativity, communication and writing stories that matter.
When asked about her writing process, Carlson explained that she must get into the right mindset before she begins. Even when she felt tired, she stayed determined and worked hard to help every to help every student improve their writing. She said the most common mistakes she sees are passive voice, spelling errors and MLA formatting habits students still carry. Instead of getting frustrated, Carlson saw those moments as chances to teach and encourage others to grow.
The hardest question to ask was about her future and what she hopes to accomplish at her new school. Carlson shared that she wants to continue making a difference and educating people through journalism. Her passions include politics, culture and food which are all areas she hopes to write about one day. No matter where she goes next, it is clear she will continue inspiring people with her voice and determination.
Overall, Carlson leaves behind an unforgettable impact on our campus newspaper. She was not only a strong editor but also a supportive mentor and friend to so many students. Her kindness, leadership, and encouragement helped all of us become more confident writers. While we will miss her deeply, we know she continues doing amazing things wherever life takes her next.
