Now that the the end of the semester is nearing, most students are busy with finals and wrapping up all of their last assignments for classes. With students registering for classes for next semester or getting everything in order to transfer, the end of the semester can be a stressful time in a student’s life. That’s why it’s so important for people to have hobbies outside of school. Everyone needs their own outlet to unwind. A way for them to relax and enjoy something as a break from the responsibilities that come with life.
After talking with a few students on campus, it became clear that our peers have a wide array of interests and hobbies. When asking what people do for fun outside of school, most said that they typically just relax at their house watching tv, or they spend time with family. However, something that was common amongst many students was going outdoors. Multiple students mentioned how they’re fans of hiking and like to go snowboarding or skiing during the winter.
Meanwhile, Michael Hennigan explained how he spends his free time differently. When asked about having any hobbies, Hennigan was quick to answer. He currently likes to play the video game Minecraft or watch the T.V. show, “One Piece.” At the end of his days, after getting his schoolwork done and getting his family ready for the day to come, Hennigan likes to wind down and relax. Hennigan finds it very peaceful to have that specific time for himself, where he isn’t being pulled in any direction. Hennigan explained how he’d recently taken an interest in Minecraft. Although Hennigan loves playing by himself, he loves to play with his younger kids as well. Whether it’s queuing up his favorite game or settling down and taking in his favorite show, Hennigan knows how to spend his time wisely.
Alejandro Jimenez, another COS student, answered the question similarly, but with different hobbies. Jimenez stressed the importance of spending time with his friends. He mentioned how it didn’t even matter what they would do. Whether they’re just talking, or doing random stuff, Jimenez enjoys the company of his close friends. Jimenez also emphasized how much he likes to practice his cinematography. Jimenez’s current career goals are to be a filmmaker. So in his spare time he really enjoys practicing and learning about his craft. Jimenez highlights this interest stating, “I enjoy doing things that let me be creative and spend time with people I’m close to.” Even when he’s not actively doing school work, Jimenez still likes to spend his time learning. Whether someone is practicing their passion or watching their favorite show, it’s clear that our COS students really do have engaging hobbies.
