The magic of a glass slipper and a pumpkin carriage will take center stage at the College of the Sequoias Theater this week as the theater department debuts Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Opening March 12., the production offers a contemporary twist to the classic tale, blending beloved music with a modern spirit.
Directed by James McDonnell, the production utilizes the updated book by Douglas Carter Beane. The story moves beyond the traditional romance to explore a kingdom in the midst of social change. While the show retains its magical roots, it introduces a plot centered on kindness, reform, and self-determination.
Ruthie Espinoza stars as Elle, whose journey begins in the soot of her family’s shadows before leading toward the royal palace. She is joined by Dean Johnson, who plays Prince Topher, a young ruler searching for his own identity. The cast features a wide range of talent, including Hannah Suggs as Marie, Molly Kane as Madame, and Kathy Gonzales and Katie Robles as the stepsisters, Charlotte and Gabriella.
The production explores the kingdom’s civic struggles through characters such as Jean-Michel, the revolutionary played by Joseph Wright. The cast also features Juan Andrade as King Sebastian and Jordain Datt as Lord Pinkleton. A full ensemble of performers rounds out the cast to bring the town and ballroom scenes to life.
The show runs for two weeks, with a special “Student Night” scheduled for Thursday, March 19. The production is rated as appropriate for all ages, making it a centerpiece event for the community. Performances are held at 7 p.m. on March 12., 13., 14., 19., 20., and 21., along with a 1 p.m. performance on Saturday, March 21..
Tickets are available at the box office, with prices set at $26 for standard admission, $24 for seniors, and a discounted rate of $22 for students. With high interest expected, guests are encouraged to secure their seats before the clock strikes midnight.
