The home game opener for College of the Sequoias softball team on January 24th, was a cold but very good game! The Giants took the win in both games against Modesto.
Game 1 started rocky in the first inning for the Giants on defense, when Modesto gained the lead 6-0. That didn’t stop the Giants from bringing it back in the 2nd inning on offense. Catcher #44, Madison Lujan, started off the Giants with the first home run of the season at home bringing the score to 6-2. By the bottom of the 4th inning, the Giants were tied 7- 7, thanks to third baseman #13 Shelby Somavia who hit a double to left field bringing in 2 runs.
It came down to the bottom of the 6th inning for the Giants, who needed to score a run to win the game. Designated Hitter #18, Andreya Mendoza, hit a single bringing in #4, Alivea Salcedo, and bringing the score 7-8. With the Giants up in the top of the 7th pitcher #5, Audrina Rodriguez, closed the game with 3 outs.
Going into the 2nd game, the Giants started off strong tying the game 1-1 in the first inning. The Giants had a strong defense and were able to keep Modesto from scoring, while their offense was strong. In the bottom of the 2nd Salcedo hit a single bringing in 2 runs and #9, Gabrielle Vasquez, hit a single bringing in 1 run. In the 3rd inning, #1, Madisyn Benedict hit, a double bringing in 2 runs. While losing light during the game the Giants were able to end the game in the bottom of the 5th with Somavia hitting a walk off home run and a RBI to win the game 10-1!
What a great way for the Giants to start off their season with back to back wins with 2 home runs! Catch the Giants playing at home again against Cabrillo on Saturday, February 7th at 10 a.m.
