In May 2016, the gaming world was introduced to a new game. A fast-paced, team-based multiplayer experience that promised unique characters with different abilities. The concept was instantly captivating, especially since first-person shooter games were very popular at the time. Not to mention, the game came from a well-known company, Blizzard Entertainment, which had already created many successful titles such as “Diablo”, “Warcraft”, and “StarCraft”.
Not only do the characters all have special abilities, but they also have their own stories and unique designs. Some of these characters include a time-traveling British woman, a scientist monkey from space, and a cyborg ninja who was almost killed by his brother; the same brother is actually in the game so…that’s fun. On top of that, Blizzard created cinematic animations to promote the game, and they worked extremely well. The most popular animation, “Dragons,” has reached over 40 million views and tells the story of the two brothers mentioned earlier.
Upon its release, Overwatch quickly became a staple game among the gaming community. The developers continued to add characters and expand the story, which kept many players engaged and excited for more. The game maintained a consistent player base for around two years until 2018.
According to former and current players, the game began to decline for several reasons. One major issue was the introduction of a new hero, Brigitte. Her abilities caused significant frustration, largely due to one simple move: Shield Bash. This ability highlighted larger balance issues during what was known as the “dive era.” Put simply, character balancing became a major problem with some heroes. Often the over0-powered characters would all be paired together which created a less than fun atmosphere in game.
Queue times also grew longer due to a declining player base, Blizzard did little to address this issue aside from adding new heroes and reworking old ones. However, the changes felt random… it wasn’t what players wanted. Another major complaint was the lack of story development. New characters were introduced without meaningful connections to the existing narrative, leaving players feeling disconnected from the game. The biggest blow came when Blizzard shifted its focus away from Overwatch entirely and toward the future…Overwatch 2.
Overwatch 2 promised many changes, including a battle pass system, a shift from six-player teams to five-player teams, and a free-to-play model across gaming platforms. Most importantly, it promised a brand-new PvE (player versus environment) mode. This mode was expected to offer deeper gameplay, customizable abilities, and a stronger focus on storytelling. The very elements that made players fall in love with Overwatch in the first place. With these new announcements, loyal Overwatch fans gave the game the benefit of the doubt because they were excited for the new stuff! This PvE feature would redefine the way people play Overwatch.
However, when the game launched, it included almost everything except the most anticipated feature: PvE. It was delayed for another year or more. For many longtime fans, this was a turning point. During its first week, the game was nearly unplayable due to long wait times and server crashes. Many players gave up, feeling that the game wasn’t worth the effort anymore. For a while, the only additions were new skins and cosmetics, most of which required real money. Blizzard began to be seen as greedy and disconnected from its community, focusing more on profit than player satisfaction. Still, some players held onto hope.
That hope was shattered in May 2023, when Blizzard officially announced that the PvE mode had been canceled. The community was devastated, feeling misled and frustrated. No clear explanation was given. However, journalist Jason Schreier reported in his book “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future Of Blizzard Entertainment,” that the reasons may have included internal profit-sharing structures and conflicts between Blizzard and Activision. Regardless, the lack of transparency only worsened the situation.
Following this announcement, many players abandoned the game entirely. Even as new characters were introduced, interest continued to decline. Trust had been broken and players were reluctant to return. To many players, it would feel like going back to a bad ex…don’t do it!
Around this time, a new competitor entered the scene: Marvel Rivals. With its balanced gameplay and recognizable characters, offering an appealing alternative for players. Comparitively, Overwatch 2 seemed outdated and overly focused on monetization. That is, until February 4, 2026, when the official PlayOverwatch YouTube channel released a major spotlight showcasing the game’s future.
The update immediately grabbed attention by killing off a major character who happened to be the leader of one of the in-game organizations. This bold move drew in returning players, while new players were introduced to exciting changes. Blizzard announced plans to release ten new characters throughout the year, starting with six in the first chapter. Each character would contribute to advancing the story.
One standout addition was a long-awaited character known as Jetpack Cat. This highly mobile character introduced a unique mechanic: the ability to carry teammates. Players quickly found creative ways to use this feature, especially for aerial strategies and surprise attacks. Plus, the character’s design is a chubby, orange cat, with a jetpack. Like how much cuter can he be?
In addition to new characters, Blizzard introduced updates such as a redesigned home screen, new collaborations, and improved competitive features. One of the most symbolic changes was the removal of the “2” from the title. According to game director Aaron Keller, “Overwatch is a game that transcends any single number.” The game was once again simply Overwatch.
Since then, the game has reached a new peak player count on Steam, with over 165,000 concurrent players, which is more than double its previous high of around 75,000 in 2023.
To celebrate its renewed success, Blizzard has been rewarding players with free loot boxes and demonstrating a greater willingness to listen to community feedback. For example, a newly released character named Anran received criticism for lacking a distinct design. In response, Blizzard announced plans to update her appearance, which was positively received by players.
With more updates on the horizon, the future of Overwatch remains uncertain—but promising. It doesn’t take much for a game to lose its audience, but if Blizzard continues to follow through on its commitments, Overwatch may finally be on the path to redemption.
