COS Sports Weekly Update

Women’s Soccer

The COS Women’s Soccer team split their games once again last week, losing their first game of the week on Tuesday against Taft College, 3-0, and winning their second game of the week against Porterville 6-0.

For the game last Tuesday, COS was able to hold off Taft for nearly the first 40 minutes of game time, before allowing a goal at the end of the first half, then another goal at the start of the second half.

Head Coach Elliot Hord commented on this difference after the game as well, saying, “I think we didn’t minimize our risk. We’ve always been talking about minimizing our risk in the back and we played with it at a certain point when we needed to clear the ball, but I don’t think anything necessarily changed, it was just an error, and we have to continue to minimize those errors”

Their 6-0 win against Porterville was pure dominance all the way through, with heavy offensive pressure that led to a 5-0 second half. All of their goals came off six separate players, giving nearly the entire team a chance to hit the back of the net.

Next week, COS will host Reedley College at 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 8.

Men’s Soccer

COS Men’s Soccer played two games last week, and won their first game in nearly a month on Friday, beating Clovis College with a score of 2-1, and their other game was a tie against Merced College, ending 2-2.

In the Merced game, players Leonardo Marquez Ramirez (El Diamante) and Gustavo Ledesma (Reedley High) each scored a goal and accounted for all of the scoring COS had on the day.

The Giants now sit at 6-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.

COS Men’s soccer will play on the road against Taft on Oct. 11.

Volleyball

COS Women’s Volleyball brings its winning streak up to four with a showing of pure dominance against both Porterville College and Taft last week, winning in a 3-0 sweep against both.

For the game on Tuesday, Outside hitter Mia Gilcrest (Redwood) once again led the team in kills with 19, followed up by opposite hitter Yajaira Gahagan (Tulare Union) with 10, and Daniela Gonzalez (Delano High) with eight.

Gilcrest continues to dominate in the kills statistic throughout all of California, leading the state in 5.33 kills per set and is second in the state in total kills with 352.

On Friday, the same trio of women led the team in kills once again, with Gilcrest at 25, Gonzalez with 12, and Gahagan with nine.

Their next game will be against West Hills Coalinga, on Oct. 14 at 6:00 p.m.
