COS Volleyball Continues Their Dominance This Season

The women’s volleyball team for the COS Giants have been having a great season so far this year, with 11 wins on the season and six losses, the Central Valley Conference is most definitely looking like it will be a close run to the top of the ladder between the Fresno City College Rams and the COS Giants.

In their recent game against the Taft Cougars this past Wednesday, the COS Women’s Volleyball team emerged victorious with a score of 25-10, 25-13, and 25-18 in a clean 3-0 sweep of their three sets.

The Lady Giants came out hitting the ball hard right from the get-go, setting the tone for the game against the Cougars for what was to come.

On the night, star player Mia Gilcrest (Redwood) of the Giants was able to tally up 19 kills in the win over the Cougars.

On the year so far, Gilcrest has been nothing short of stellar for the Lady Giants with a 5.13 kill per game average as well as being second in the conference in the category with 88 kills on the year. The love for Gilcrest is made no more apparent than by her teammates screaming on the bench and the awesome graphics that pop up on the jumbotron during the game following each kill that Gilcrest acquires.

When asking Rix about Gilcrest’s season so far this season, Rix had some warm words to share for her outside hitter stating, “It is incredible to coach such an athletic, coachable, humble young lady… I always say I get to live vicariously because I’m teaching her things I could not do as a player.”

Although this team loves Gilcrest and her miraculous play so far this season, Rix does not take anything away from the ladies on the team with her, “Everyone has a role and those roles change… each girl really owns that role.”

In regards to the significant performances of other players on the night, Rix stated that Freshmen Daniela Gonzalez (Delano), Freshman Susan Cordova (Tulare Union), and sophomore Yahaira Gahagan (Tulare Union) all had performances that stuck out for their own particular reasons. Whether it was setting the tone getting touches or stopping the momentum of the other team, these ladies helped to contribute to the victory in a major way on Wednesday night.

“Taft is a great team always, the girls knew they were going to have to play hard and they did tonight.” Rix said in regards to the Taft Cougars, who fall to 9-6 on the season after the loss against the Giants.

The COS Lady Giants have their next game away at the Porterville Pirates on Friday the 7th of October at 6 p.m. For the next home game for the Giants, you will have to wait until the following week on Wednesday, October 12th as they will play the West Hills Coalinga Falcons at 6 p.m. once again.
