Prop Incident on Set of “Rust” Results in Death of Photography Director and Injured Director

On Thursday, October 21st, 2021, Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop weapon that led to the injury of Director Joel Souza and the death of Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins on the set of the upcoming film “Rust.” This incident is believed to be caused by negligence in the props department of the film crew.

Santa Fe County law enforcement and first responders arrived at the Bonanza Creek Ranch Thursday evening, where Souza and Hutchins were then transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital to receive medical attention. Souza was hospitalized for his wounds, and Hutchins was pronounced dead not long after arrival.

The film crew present the day of the unfortunate occurrence noted that almost half the crew had walked out that day due to protests of unfair working conditions. An email issued from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 44 has stated that the prop gun fired by Baldwin did contain a live round.
