This year went by very quickly with all of our classes and activities. But guess what? We finished! Go Giants! We pushed ourselves to meet our goals, we all have amazing careers ahead of us, and it’s exciting to get this far. The struggles were real with family life, education and work, but how we worked through these shows our determination to go for our goals. It was hard to see the big picture with so much on our minds, but look at what we have achieved. College of the Sequoias has been an incredible school to attend, and they truly know how to take care of their students so that we succeed. From the day we get here, we have access to the Welcome Center, ESS, EOPS, AAC, Book Store, Library, Tutoring Center, Mental Health and Health Center, Giant Market Place and the Student Success Program. We know they can all play a part in ensuring our success.
Let’s take a minute to talk about our professors at COS. They are there for us, they’re inspiring with what they specialize in, they give great advice that can help shape us in the direction we want to go, offer support with our classes, and encourage us when we need it. They guide us in the direction we want to go with our careers or help us change our course to get onto the right path. We have professors that will work with us and offer extra credit to help us with finishing our classes strong.
The 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. COS Commencement Ceremonies both went great. We lined up in either a blue or orange dotted line to split us up. As we came out to the Mineral Bowl Stadium, the blue dot line moved single file and sat to the right of the stage, whereas an orange dot sat to the left. We had students who did the pledge of allegiance, while some sang the star-spangled banner. Jessica Morrison, the Vice President of Student Services, asked all who are transferring this Fall and Spring to stand up and be recognized. Morrison shared,
“As you embark on the next chapter of your education at your transfer Universities, you may become a Gaucho, an Aggie, a Bulldog, a Banana Slug, a Braun, a Trojan, a Hornet or even a Mustang. But always remember that first, you were a Giant.” We also heard from Dr. Brent Calvin, Superintendent and the President of COS, who shared,
“As we prepare to award the degrees, I’d like to tell you about this wonderful class. This year, the College of the Sequoias will award over 3,200 degrees and certificates, that’s the most ever in our 97 years. In addition, 958 of those graduates have chosen to celebrate with us tonight, that’s also a high water mark, thank you. As Vice President Morrison just alluded to, in the fall over 1,400 of our students will be transferring to four-year universities and colleges, and earlier this spring our foundation and their board awarded over $600,000 in scholarships. It has been an amazing year. Congratulations to students, facility staff and administrators alike, it has been a heck of a year, congratulations. And now, it’s time to award those diplomas. Let’s go!”
