For College of the Sequoias students that are considering viewing the recently released Minecraft film, here is a small review of what to expect from the film (without discussing spoilers)! Many fans voiced their concerns on social media platforms, stating their low expectations for the film after having viewed the official trailer. I also held these same expectations, believing that it would be inaccurate and disappointing. However, after having played the game since I was child, I decided to go watch it anyway. Now, I can confidently say that the film was surprisingly good considering the difficult challenge of merging the real world with the world of Minecraft. The game’s logic was accurately incorporated into the film with a few new aspects to aid the storyline. Warner Bros. Pictures partnered with Mojang Studios to bring a surprisingly realistic and precise Minecraft Film to theaters.
The film focuses on themes of teamwork, adventure, and creativity, as well as the inclusion of new antagonists that has never been seen before in the game. They even included cameos of beloved content creators whom many fans grew up watching. Being able to see DanTDM, Aphmau, LDShadowLady, and even a tribute to the late YouTuber, Technoblade, which was a heartfelt moment for many fans.
Currently, the film is receiving mixed reviews from the audience with one side criticizing the choice of CGI animation style and characters/casting while the other side found the film to be lighthearted and quite humorous. Some audience members wished the studio producers had used a different style of animation rather than attempting to make the Minecraft world realistic. Others are upset about the choice of casting and character backgrounds, wishing that they had gone in a different direction rather than the common cliche for comedy films.
Although the film is not one that would be considered critically acclaimed, it’s still a fun movie to watch. Besides some of the corny jokes, the film provides some good laughs and a general fun experience. If the hilarious collaboration between Jack Black and Jason Momoa does not convince you to watch the film, maybe the interesting popcorn buckets and drinks might! You should also make sure to stay for the post credit scenes for teasers!
