Jonathan Graham is in his second year as a Marketing Media Specialist at College of the Sequoias (COS). With nearly a decade of experience in the media industry, his work involves photography, videography, and graphic design. Alongside his team, Lauren Fishback and Vanessa Lamb, Graham captures various events and moments across COS’s three campuses. Graham produces content for social media, billboards, commercials, and other promotional materials that shape the college’s public image.
The Campus Journal had the opportunity to ask Graham a few questions about his career and experiences.
How do you know when a project is a success?
“Going into a project, knowing the mission, is key. Once you’ve been doing it for a while, you start with the outcome in mind. This ensures that you’re capturing the necessary content. A project is successful when you get what you need to fulfill its purpose.”
What software and tools are you most proficient in for editing? Why do you prefer them?
“Adobe software is my go-to, but lately, CapCut desktop has been stealing my time for short video edits. Adobe offers professional-grade tools, but CapCut provides efficiency for quick projects.”
How do you make people you interview feel comfortable on camera?
“It’s very important to make people feel at ease when the camera is on them. You have to show them that you’re there to make them look good, and that starts with making them feel comfortable. Knowing your craft allows you to remain calm, which, in turn, helps your subject relax. Asking questions, showing genuine interest, and making them feel important all contribute to a successful interview.”
What do you do outside of COS? Do you have any hobbies or other creative outlets?
“Outside of COS, I stay busy with event photography, videography, and photo booths. I’m also preparing to open the first creative studio dedicated to podcasting and video work. Apart from media, I enjoy spending time with my family.”
Do you have any advice for aspiring videographers and photographers?
“Educate yourself and find someone who is already doing what you love—be their right hand. Don’t focus on money at the beginning. Once you create value, the money will follow.”
Jonathan Graham’s insights offer valuable lessons for aspiring creatives. His passion and dedication to media continue to enhance COS’s digital presence, inspiring future photographers and videographers to hone their craft and pursue their dreams.
