For the past eight years, Allyson Briano, head coach for swimming and diving, has been leading the Swimming for Fitness class, a course designed for students of all skill levels looking to improve their swimming abilities. Briano’s passion for coaching stems from her own love for the sport. “Coaching lets me relive my youth—the best days of my life,” she said. She finds energy and excitement in helping her athletes grow, whether they are beginners or advanced swimmers.
When asked how Swimming for Fitness differs from competitive swimming, Briano explained that the class includes a wide range of students. “Some are just learning the basics, while others are talented enough to be on the swim team but are ineligible,” she said. Teaching such a diverse group has helped her refine her coaching skills. “I had to learn how to break down the strokes to the tiniest bit to teach my students,” she explained, adding that this process has made her a better coach overall.
Briano also emphasized the physical demands of swimming for fitness. “It’s a little harder than people expect. There are so many levels to fitness in swimming,” she said. Strength in the legs, core, and lungs all play a crucial role in improving endurance and technique.
For students hesitant about taking the class, Briano offers reassurance. “There is nobody that can’t take this class,” she said. “Even if you have zero swimming skills, there’s always a lane for you. I can work with you individually and help you progress to the next level.”
With her years of experience and dedication to coaching, Briano continues to inspire students, proving that swimming is a lifelong skill that anyone can develop.
