The Campus Journal ventured out on the Visalia Campus to ask students what they were currently listening to. The trend started on TikTok, by going up to strangers and asking what they were listening to unprompted. It’s intriguing to see what people are listening to on their way to class or on the way home. The songs varied from student to student, with one student listening to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”. While other students listened to vastly different genres like Rap and R&B. Surprisingly, one student was even on a phone call when approached! You never know what someone is listening to in their headphones during their free time.
With the music industry at an all time high it’s no surprise that today’s generation loves music. With new and unique artists like Chappell Roan, Tyler the Creator, and Sabrina Carpenter changing the music industry is growing fast and the talent is getting better and better. The rapid growth in the music industry is seen on music platforms like Spotify and Apple Music especially.
These large music platforms play into the high consumption of music as Spotify and Apple Music provide easy access to music, & fun features depending on the platform. Annually both streaming services provide a breakdown of listeners personal music history, Spotify has “Spotify Wrapped”and Apple Music has “Apple Music Replay”. Both platforms allow listeners to see who their most listened to artist or track was for that past year. This new level of engagement connects listeners closer to who and what they are listening to, something that past generations didn’t have. It truly does show how expansive the music industry is today!
