Alina Hernandez, a second-year political science major at the College of the Sequoias, has come up to support her peers through her dedication to tutoring. With plans to transfer to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) next fall. Alina’s journey as a tutor began unexpectedly. During her first semester when her Art History professor invited her to become a Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader. Since then, she has expanded her tutoring roles to include Micro and Macroeconomics, Political Science, and writing support at the college’s tutorial center and writing center.
“I wasn’t familiar with tutoring before,” Alina admits. “I never really understood how it would benefit me.” However, her experiences have transformed her perspective. She now thoroughly enjoys working with students and adapting her tutoring styles to meet their needs. “The biggest challenge is balancing a lot on my plate as a full-time student and maintaining other extracurricular activities,” she says. “But I’ve become extremely passionate about working with others and strengthening skills with my peers.”
Alina’s approachable and relatable attitude has made her a favorite among students. “Feedback from students who consistently come back has shown they appreciate having someone they can relate to help them get through their classes,” she notes. She encourages any student feeling nervous or anxious to visit the tutoring centers, emphasizing the benefits of utilizing these resources to enhance their learning process.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Alina maintains a healthy social life, with a particular love for live music. Whether attending concerts, festivals, or simply hanging out with friends, music is her niche. When she needs to unwind, she prefers to relax with her cats and dog. Or binge-watching shows like “Brooklyn 99,” which she highly recommends.
Alina Hernandez’s journey as a tutor at COS demonstrates the power of peer support in education. Her dedication to helping others while managing her own academic and personal life makes her an inspiring figure on campus.
