College of The Sequoias is proud to present its second exhibition, “In the Light: paintings by Paul Buxman” running from October 10th through November 22. The exhibition highlights Buxman’s dynamic and colorful plein-air styled paintings that offer a unique glimpse into aspects of life in the San Joaquin Valley.
After studying Impressionism in Illinois under Karl Steele, Buxman returned to California to teach at a school while also instructing figure painting at the Fresno Art Museum. In 1980, he made the decision to devote himself fully to both painting and farming.
Buxman, who grew up on a small farm at the foot of Smith Mountain, captures the essence of his surroundings through vibrant depictions of the Valley’s Landscapes. His work highlights the beauty found in everyday scenes, from ditches and irrigation structures to weeds between rows of trees. Buxman’s work offers a fresh perspective on the familiar landscapes of the San Joaquin Valley, capturing elements often overlooked.
In his artist statement, Buxman shares the emotional journey of painting: “I paint with conflicting emotions always at play-enthusiasm, hope, and fear. The process of painting cannot be tamed into something predictable. When I look at one of my successful paintings, it’s not pride that I feel; it’s more like relief that somehow this one didn’t get away from me.”
