Welcome, new and returning Giants, to the Fall 2024 semester at College of the Sequoias! For many, your priority is still purchasing textbooks, stocking up on classroom materials or saving up for a school-ready laptop. On top of this, you may also be concerned about how to pay your tuition or need help paying for living expenses. You might think it’s too late, but COS students can still get financial aid and can apply for FAFSA and the Cal Promise Grant! There are just a few days left, so get your last-minute applications in!
According to Governor Gavin Newsom, students attending community colleges, like COS, can still apply for aid by September 3rd. This means that if you still haven’t applied for financial aid, there’s no time to waste! You can still apply for FAFSA at:
Federal Student Aid
No Description
When financial aid is disbursed, issuers will typically send the money directly to the school to pay off any balance from tuition. The remaining amount left over will be refunded to the bank account provided in your application. If you are selected for financial aid, and depending on the aid options that you accept, you may receive grants and up to two types of loans.
Grants do not need to be paid back, subsidized loans do not need to be repaid until you’ve finished school, and unsubsidized loans will accumulate interest regardless of your student status. Students who apply will be given a way to contact their loan providers, and it is their responsibility to stay up to date with payments, as well as maintain enough credits to be eligible for the grace period.
Don’t be alarmed if your financial aid doesn’t arrive right away– depending on the time you submit your application throughout the semester, it could take at least a month or more to process.
At COS, if you are eligible to receive aid from FAFSA, you may also qualify for the California College Promise Grant. Students who have completed applications for FAFSA or the California Dream Act do not have to apply for the grant. This grant waives the costs of your tuition for the entire year and has no minimum requirement for units taken during the year. To apply, click the link:

So what are you waiting for? Apply for the FAFSA before it’s too late, and you could even receive a fee waiver for a year’s tuition!
