Freshmen at College of the Sequoias may have a variety of questions and are looking for advice that would benefit them in their first semester at college. Upperclassmen who have already been through the ropes of learning how to handle and balance college life are giving the newest students on campus some good advice.
One freshman, Diana Zapico, wanted to know how to find good parking. “At the beginning, they said that after the first two weeks of classes were done, finding parking would be easy. It has not been easy.” Upperclassmen told the Campus Journal, “Parking is definitely a hard one. I’d say for sure get in where you fit in, but don’t be afraid to ask people if you can have their parking spot if they’re leaving.”
Zapico also wanted to know how to be more productive without getting tired and burning out. Upperclassman Jeidi Antunez says, “I usually like to plan out my days, I like to relax myself, and know what I have to do ahead of time so I don’t stress myself out.”
First-year student Lillie Ivy wonders, “Is it better to figure out what you want to major in right away or to go with the flow while figuring out what you want to do?” Upperclassman students told the Campus Journal that it really depends on who you ask. Some people may say they had it all figured out and planned, and others might recommend not sticking to a certain script and trying out different things.
Another common question amongst freshmen was, “How do you balance your school and social life?”. Sophomore Josslyn Caskey said, “Balancing school work and my personal life is tricky around finals or midterms, but not overloading is important, and know that social life is just as important as an education.”
The Campus Journal asked if there was any additional advice they thought would be beneficial for new students to know. Responses included, “If you are taking a morning class, try to get here earlier to find parking. They also told us, “Just breathe and know that it’s okay to step away from what’s stressing you out because stressing doesn’t get anyone anywhere much faster”.
