Every Fall, thousands of students start their college academic journeys right here at the College of the Sequoias. Many try to fill up their schedule in order to complete their two years and move on to a four-year university. However, not many consider that stress is one of the major consequences of taking on too many units.
Many new to college life believe they can handle multiple courses and activities but what they need to understand is that college is different from high school. The student is expected to make their
schedule work in order to meet the demanding deadlines. This eventually leaves many with burnout and potentially a “W” on their academic records.
What can students do to avoid this?
It’s important to remember to take it easy in the first semester. While it is important to meet one’s graduating goals, that won’t happen if a student takes on more than they can handle.
Also, it’s crucial to take breaks and to have a life outside of school.
Finally, consider visiting the COS Student Health Center, where mental health services are offered. The Student Health Center has offices on all three COS campuses. The Visalia office is located in the Giant Forest Building; The Hanford office location is in EDU-45; and the Tulare office location is located in Building A room A110.
