Easy Victory for COS Tennis
On March 8, 2022, the COS women’s Tennis team played in a game against Porterville College that was won by forfeit. Even though the other team had already lost the match before they stepped onto the clay, there was still tennis that was played, even if it was pretty low stakes.
The format of the match itself was representative of how abnormal the situation was. The opposing team, Porterville College, brought only three players into the game and as a result, lost by forfeit.
Due to the nature of the team only bringing three players, the format of the match had to be changed as a result.
“They only had three players, so it was an automatic forfeit. But we still wanted to get a little bit of work in, so we did one doubles, then we did singles, and singles again with one more double, along with one more singles game after that, and we ended up playing five or six matches and won all of them,” head coach Chad Borkey explained after the game.
Even though this game was not important since COS had already won, getting work in after missing a game last Friday due to a bye in the schedule was crucial for the games upcoming in the next few weeks.
Borkey stated, “You know you just don’t get the same looks in practice that you do when you are playing other people, so I really liked just getting that work in today along with being able to play in a different format, and it was absolutely a great warmup.”
Their next game on March 11 is a four-hour drive away to play against Solano, a team that they played earlier in the season. Even though they 9-0 swept them the first time, the development of the season may bring new challenges for both sides as each team looks to improve their records for the year.
