Barb and Star Go-To Vista Del Mar Review
‘Bridesmaids’ Writers Deliver Comedy Gold in New Movie
Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar is written by and stars comedians Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo as two middle-aged midwestern gals that take the vacation of a lifetime. What is expected to be a trip of rejuvenation soon turns into a tale of espionage.
The leading ladies are also joined by Jamie Dornan of the Fifty Shades trilogy, with special appearances by comedians Damon Wayans Jr, Wendi Mclendon-Covey, and Vanessa Bayer; there is also a surprise cameo by Reba McEntire.
This is the first writing collaboration of Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo since the 2011 smash hit Bridesmaids. In Barb and Star, Wiig is able to flex her comedic chops by playing two roles in the film; similar to Mike Myers having multiple characters in the Austin Powers movies. Leading man Jamie Dornan proves that he’s not just another pretty face and stands out as a scene-stealer against the comedy juggernauts. The former Christian Grey also has a quirky musical number.
Barb and Star is a comedy that often feels like an extended Saturday Night Live sketch, in the best way possible.
Right from the beginning, you know that you aren’t watching your typical comedy. The eccentric humor can feel out of the box, but the talent of Wiig and Mumulo makes it work. While the laughs aren’t gut-busting like they are in Bridesmaids, the film is charming and entertaining.
With so much happening in the world, Barb and Star is a necessary distraction and a fun time; you won’t be able to stop grinning. If you have the chance, watch this movie without knowing any context. Doing so will have you in for a real treat.
Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is available to rent on Amazon and Vudu.
