It is possible to learn English for free! At College of the Sequoias, a class is offered and welcomes all students from different ages to come learn English for free. These classes offer listening, speaking, grammar and writing classes and happen from Monday through Friday from 8:10 a.m. to 1:25 p.m..
The English as a Second Language (ESL) classes give non-English speakers the opportunity to practice their English. Students are able to borrow computers, internet and books for free. The ESL teachers are even able to teach non-English speaking students learn how to use new platforms like Canvas.
When asked about the purpose of ESL classes, ESL teacher Barbara Laid said, “ESL classes are designed for multilingual students who are interested in developing their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English. The courses are taught by faculty who have specialized studies in second language acquisition for adults.”
Laid also added, “Our ESL classes are designed for students whose primary language is not English. In other words, ESL students are multilingual speakers of other languages. COS offers two ESL pathways: Career development and College preparation. Many multilingual speakers in our area are not aware that COS ESL classes are free of charge to the students allowing them to develop their English skills and prepare for a career and technical education or academic pathway. For example, during the 2024/25 academic year, ESL students earned 21 AA/AS degrees, 29 Career and Technical Education certificates, and 66 ESL Certificates of Competency. Both credit and noncredit ESL students have access to free tutoring. Our Language Center specializes in tutoring for multilingual students. Additional student support services for multilingual students include the Student Success Program.”
Fernando Ramos an ESL student said, “I’m a current ESL student at COS. In my opinion, ESL at COS teaches everything you need to know to advance and become fluent if you are committed to working hard. The professors are superlative and have many years of experience. In addition, the program is supported by government funding, therefore you can learn to speak like a native without damaging your pocketbook. I highly recommend the program to anyone who wants to dedicate themself to speaking and understanding the English”
A similar opinion was shared by Gabriel Santos another ESL student, “ESL is very good program, it helped me a lot to improve my English. When I arrived here in the USA, I couldn’t communicate with people, after doing it for three semester I am much more confident and I know I can express myself.”
