Jonathon Brooks is one of the many communications professors here at College of the Sequoias. Brooks has been teaching for over twenty years all over the valley from Merced to Bakersfield. Most of his teaching jobs are at College of the Sequoias, Fresno City College, and California State University, Fresno. He started as a teaching assistant here at COS and while as a TA, his mentor was the one who truly inspired him to become a professor and teach communications.
Aside from his mentor, the field of communications inspired Brooks along with his previous professors teaching styles. Brooks’ professors had different styles and approaches but had that same passion which further inspired him to pursue communications. According to Brooks’, “ …as a person on the spectrum I have always found communicating with others difficult and when I first took a communication class here at College of the Sequoias it really hit me. I loved learning about how people interact. So I became passionate about it and took as many classes as I could.”
Professor Brooks’ favorite aspect of COS is how much he sees his colleagues as family. Brooks’ claims that everyone who teaches here is amazing and they truly want to see the students succeed, not just is school, but in life. Brooks’ says that, “I want to see my students find their success. One of my favorite things is hearing from my students that have graduated and moved into their careers. Seeing the amazing things they do and accomplish with their life.” He cares deeply about his student’s success not just in his class, but as they venture into greater things.
Some fun facts about the Brooks is that he used to play baseball for COS, however he lost the passion when communications came into play. He lives a very active life, playing soccer roughly 3-4 times a week, horse riding with his family, and surfing as much as possible. Lastly, Brooks’ favorite day of the year is graduation day because he feels inspired by all of the students and their family’s smiling faces when they’re awarded their degrees.
