The end of the spring semester swiftly approaches, an exciting and stressful time for many students. Deadlines quickly approach, exams loom over the horizon, and a thousand other issues begin to pile up. It’s not a stretch to say that students may very well succumb to a state of academic burnout. Academic burnout causes students to suffer a lot of stress, however things don’t have to be this way. By taking these steps, students can make an effort to triumph over this difficult mental block.
The first thing students should do is recognize when they’re going through academic burnout. Academic burnout refers to the feeling of perpetual stress with feelings of exhaustion and brain fog. Feelings of restlessness to complete assignments are not uncommon. Some might even experience physical symptoms such as headaches, sleep deprivation, and constant frustration.
The next step is to prioritize your mental health. Take small breaks when needed. Rather than scrolling through reels or Tik Toks on your breaks, reconnect with nature! Step away from your screens and take a breath of fresh air by going on a walk. Make an effort to stay well rested and well nourished. Supply your body and your mind with adequate nutrition and a healthy amount of sleep.
Next, be careful not to overcommit yourself to things and to have realistic goals. Break large tasks into small steps in order to stay organized and motivated. Don’t wait to finish large assignments and attempt to tough it out the night before due dates.
Remember that there are on campus resources. College of the Sequoias offers many services from tutoring to academic advising in order to rest the minds of stressed out students. COS’s mental health counseling services are also here for you.
Students can receive up to eight free counseling sessions per semester. For more information visit:
