For the first time, College of Sequoias will install security cameras on school grounds.

Up to $88,000 has been allocated by the Board of Trustees to purchase 45 cameras. They will be put up in parking lots and public areas to provide security, aid in investigation, and track movement, said Kevin Mizner, COS Police Chief.

With the money allocated, Mizner has been able to work with private vendors to design the system and propose quotes to COS Senior Management.

“Realistically, I would hope to have installation started within 60 days. It’s a great resource, I look forward to having them. When people know there are cameras on site, it acts as a crime prevention tool, because they know they’re being monitored” said Mizner.

The idea for cameras had been discussed informally for years. Summer break-ins led Mizner to see if funding for securing parking lots could be expanded onto campus.

“Crime on campus is relatively low and the vast majority of incidents are not committed by students,” Mizner said, “vending machine break-ins parking lot hit-and-runs and bicycle thefts are the main problems.”

But occasionally, serious crimes such as the recent campus arson incidents occur. In these cases, Mizner believes cameras provide a very valuable tool.

In these investigations “We are constantly asked, do you have cameras?, If we had cameras (during the arson spree) we could have seen who was coming in and out of the bathrooms and who was milling around,” said Mizner.

The monitors will be inside the campus police station but will not be live-monitored. All cameras will be clearly visible and shoot on a digital recording loop. Recordings will likely be kept for two weeks said Mizner.

“We are not recording and maintaining for eternity, just for investigation” said Mizner.
