The College of the Sequoias softball team clinched a playoff spot with its doubleheader sweep of Merced on Thursday.

In game one, Merced jumped to a two-run lead scoring in one run in the first and second inning.

After the COS evened the score at 2-2 in the second, the Blue Devils plated five runs over the course of the next five innings.

Down 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Giants exploded for five runs to force the 7-7 game to extra innings.

After a clean top of the eight by Giants pitcher Ashley Guzman, COS walked-off in the bottom half of the frame.

Alondra Zavala’s sacrifice fly to center field was hit deep enough to score Ashley Paradine for the 8-7 victory.

Game two saw the Giants take control with the help of their 16 hits.

Sequoias took a commanding 4-0 lead going into the sixth inning.

After Merced cut the Giants lead down to two, COS struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth, en route to an 8-4 victory.

Sequoias will travel to Merced on Tuesday to makeup a rained-out March 21 game.
